Understanding Credentials

Who Should Do My Child’s Evaluation? Understanding Credentials

Whether it’s for ADHD, learning differences, autism, or another concern, choosing the right professional to assess your child is important—and sometimes confusing.

Why Credentials Matter

There are many different types of mental health professionals, and they all play important roles. But not everyone is trained to do formal evaluations, especially those needed for schools or to clarify a diagnosis. Neuropsychologists and clinical psychologists have specialized training in testing, assessment, and diagnosis. This means we know how to use standardized tools, interpret the results, and make sense of complex symptoms.

What’s Unique About Their Training?

Neuropsychologists and clinical psychologists spend years learning how to administer standardized tests. We’re trained not just to give these tests, but to interpret the scores using normative data. That means we compare your child’s results to what’s typical for their age group, so we can see where they’re doing well and where they might need support.

This training helps us look at the big picture. We’re taught to consider a wide range of possibilities, not just focus on one diagnosis. For example, someone who only works with ADHD might be more likely to see every challenge through that lens. But broadly trained psychologists are careful to look for other contributors, like anxiety, learning disabilities, or medical factors, so nothing gets overlooked. This approach helps us make an accurate diagnosis and create a plan that truly fits your child.

Why Not Just See Any Provider?

It’s tempting to start with whoever is available or recommended. But if your goal is to get school accommodations or a formal diagnosis, it’s best to work with someone who has the credentials schools require. Otherwise, you may find that the evaluation isn’t accepted, and you have to start over, which can be frustrating and costly.
